Air India to Suspend Delhi–Washington Flights from September 1 Amid Fleet Upgrade and Airspace Challenges
New Delhi, August 11, 2025 — Air India has announced that it will temporarily suspend its direct flights between Delhi and Washington, D.C., starting September 1, 2025. The decision comes as part of a strategic move to ensure operational reliability and route integrity, the airline said in an official statement.
The suspension is primarily due to a shortfall in available aircraft, as Air India has begun retrofitting its fleet of 26 Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners. This extensive upgrade program, aimed at enhancing passenger experience, will keep several aircraft out of service until late 2026.
In addition to fleet constraints, the continued closure of Pakistani airspace has significantly impacted Air India’s long-haul operations. Flights are being rerouted over longer paths, increasing fuel consumption and complicating scheduling.
Passenger Support and Alternatives
Air India has assured that passengers with bookings to or from Washington after September 1 will be contacted directly. They will be offered alternative travel options, including:
Despite the suspension of the direct route, Air India will continue to offer one-stop services to Washington, D.C. via four major U.S. gateways:
These flights will be operated in partnership with Alaska Airlines, United Airlines, and Delta Air Lines, allowing passengers to travel on a single itinerary with checked-through baggage to their final destination.
Continued North American Operations
Air India reaffirmed its commitment to North American connectivity, maintaining non-stop flights to six major cities, including:
The airline emphasized that the temporary suspension is a calculated step to improve long-term service quality and customer satisfaction.
