Xiangyang, Hubei Province, China — In a bizarre and shocking incident, a 90-year-old woman named Qin unknowingly used a live hand grenade as a hammer for over two decades. The story, which recently surfaced during the demolition of her old house, has gone viral across social media platforms.
Qin discovered the object years ago while working on her farm. Mistaking the grenade for an unusually shaped metal lump, she took it home and began using it for everyday tasks—cracking walnuts, pounding red pepper, and hammering nails into walls. Over time, the grenade’s handle became smooth and glossy from repeated use, while the head showed deep pits from impact.
The truth came to light when workers began reconstructing her house and identified the object as a Chinese Type 67 hand grenade, a military-grade explosive device. Authorities were immediately alerted, and a bomb disposal squad safely removed and destroyed the grenade.
Police confirmed that the grenade was real and active, not a training model. Miraculously, it never detonated despite years of rough handling. Officials have since urged citizens to report any suspicious objects and avoid using unknown items for household tasks.
The incident has left netizens stunned. One user commented, “It’s impressive that Grandma Qin used the hand grenade for over 20 years without ever pulling the fuse out of curiosity.” Another wrote, “Its failure to explode is just an exceptional case.”
