A powerful earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck the Balıkesir province in northwestern Turkey early Sunday morning. The epicenter was located in Sındırgı, at a depth of 11 kilometers, according to Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD). The tremors were felt as far as Istanbul, nearly 200 kilometers away, alarming residents in the densely populated city of over 16 million people.
