Sri Lanka has been struck by the devastating Ditoya cyclone, which has unleashed torrential rains, strong winds, and landslides across the country. The National Disaster Management Centre reported that at least 56 people have lost their lives, while dozens remain missing. Nearly 44,000 people have been affected, with many families relocated to schools and temporary shelters. The capital Colombo, along with eastern and central regions, has been among the worst hit. Continuous rainfall triggered severe landslides in the hill districts, particularly in Badulla and Nuwara Eliya.

The heavy downpour disrupted operations at Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo, forcing at least 15 flights to be diverted. Power and telecommunications have collapsed in many areas, leaving nearly 7 million people without electricity. The Colombo Stock Exchange suspended trading, while schools and train services were halted. Rescue operations are being jointly carried out by the military and police, with many people rescued from rooftops. India has dispatched the INS Vikrant aircraft carrier to assist in relief and rescue efforts.

Economically, the cyclone has caused severe damage. Agriculture and the tea industry have suffered major losses due to flooding. Transport and communication networks have broken down, delivering a heavy blow to the country’s economic activities. Experts warn that this could become one of the worst flood disasters in Sri Lanka’s history.

Ditoya cyclone has created a grave humanitarian and economic crisis for Sri Lanka. Torrential rains, landslides, power outages, and the collapse of transport systems have virtually paralyzed the nation. Analysts emphasize that international cooperation and rapid relief measures are essential to overcome this catastrophe.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep condolences to those who lost their loved ones in the disaster. He prayed for the quick rehabilitation, safety, and comfort of the affected families. On social media, the Prime Minister wrote:

“I express my deepest condolences to those who lost their loved ones in the Ditoya cyclone in Sri Lanka. I pray for the speedy rehabilitation, safety, and comfort of the affected families.”

As a close maritime partner, India has swiftly extended solidarity by sending vital humanitarian aid and relief materials under Operation Sagar Bandhu. India has also assured readiness to provide further assistance as required to help Sri Lanka cope with the crisis.
