IMD Weather Update: Heavy Rain, Dense Fog, and Cold Wave Alerts Across India
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued multiple weather warnings for the last two days of December, signaling a major shift in conditions across several states.
Heavy rainfall is expected in Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Punjab, Karnataka, and Arunachal Pradesh. Jammu & Kashmir, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Karaikal, and Puducherry are also under rain alerts. In Himachal Pradesh, snowfall is likely in higher regions along with rain. Rajasthan will see strong winds and foggy mornings.
Dense fog warnings have been issued for Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh. Fog will also affect Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, North Bengal, Sikkim, Jharkhand, Odisha, and the northeastern states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram, and Tripura.
Cold wave conditions are forecast for Odisha, while Bihar and Uttar Pradesh will experience “cold day” situations. Similar conditions are expected in parts of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
In the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, thunderstorms with rain and gusty winds of 35–40 km/h are likely.
West Bengal will see a slight rise in temperatures. In South Bengal, including Kolkata, minimum temperatures will increase by 2–3°C. On December 31, Kolkata’s temperature will hover around 13°C, rising to 14–16°C in early January. In North Bengal, light rain is expected in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Alipurduar. Higher hill areas such as Sandakphu, Ghoom, and Chatakpur may witness snowfall between December 31 and January 2.
