UPI: How Much Money Can You Transfer in a Day? Here's What You Need to Know
Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has become the most popular mode of digital transactions in India. From small shopkeepers to large businesses, everyone is using UPI for seamless payments. Its ease of use and 24/7 availability have made it a preferred choice for millions. However, many users often wonder: what is the maximum amount one can transfer via UPI in a single day?
It’s not uncommon to face transaction failures when trying to send large sums of money, which leads to confusion and frustration. The daily transaction limit for UPI is set by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). As per current guidelines, a user can transfer up to ₹1 lakh per day using UPI. This limit applies to most banks and UPI apps and covers both person-to-person (P2P) and person-to-merchant (P2M) transactions.
It’s important to note that some banks have their own restrictions. For example, if you hold an account with the State Bank of India (SBI), you can perform up to 20 P2P transactions per day using UPI. However, there is no cap on the number of P2M transactions, which means you can make unlimited payments to merchants.
In addition to regular UPI transactions, users can also make payments for taxes, apply for IPOs, and transfer funds to verified hospitals or educational institutions under RBI’s Retail Direct Scheme. In such cases, the transaction limit can go up to ₹5 lakhs per day, depending on the purpose and platform.
For smaller transactions, UPI Lite offers a simplified version of UPI. Using UPI Lite, you can make payments up to ₹1,000 per transaction. You can add up to ₹4,000 to your UPI Lite wallet in a day, and the maximum wallet balance allowed at any time is ₹5,000.
In summary, while the standard daily UPI transfer limit is ₹1 lakh, specific use cases and platforms may allow higher limits. Users should also be aware of their bank’s individual policies and transaction caps to avoid failed payments and ensure smooth digital transactions.
