IGNOU Hosts National Lecture on 'One Nation, One Election' with Widespread Participation



On 21st May 2025, IGNOU RC Kolkata Participates in National Lecture on "One Nation, One Election". The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), organized a Special Lecture on the topic “One Nation, One Election” at Baba Saheb Ambedkar Sabhagar, IGNOU Campus, New Delhi. The live session was part of a nationwide outreach initiative designed to engage academic institutions in vital policy dialogues. The keynote address was delivered by Sh Shivraj Singh Chauhan, Hon’ble Minister of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare and Rural Development, Government of India.

IGNOU Regional Centre (RC), Kolkata, participated in the event through online mode, along with all other regional centres across the country. RC Kolkata organized a special live screening of the event at IGNOU LSC-2887P, with active participation from officers, staff, and learners, with 87 participants attending the session. The event was also live streamed at various LSCs under the Regional Centre Kolkata through which 176 learners participated in the event.

The lecture highlighted the importance of synchronizing elections in India to reduce logistical challenges, financial expenditure, and the repeated use of manpower. Sh Chouhan emphasized that a unified election system would ensure more efficient governance and policy continuity while reducing administrative disruptions.

The event also featured an address by Sunil Bansal, National General Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who reiterated the advantages of the proposed “One Nation, One Election” framework in strengthening democratic practices and national unity. The session included a post-lecture discussion where students from across the country explored the relevance of electoral reforms in today’s political landscape. One of the learners from RC Kolkata, Ms. Megha Goenka interacted in the valuable discourse raising pertinent questions which aimed at strengthening the foundations of democracy.

Dr. Sujata Dutta Hazarika, Senior Regional Director, Regional Centre Kolkata, expressed her gratitude to the University for organizing such interactive and outreach programmes. She also encouraged students to actively engage with contemporary policy issues, emphasizing the importance of understanding electoral reforms for the future of democratic governance.

Learners from across India engaged in an interactive session with the dignitaries, raising pertinent questions about the impact and implementation of simultaneous elections.

The lecture was streamed live on all IGNOU’s social media platforms, allowing students to join virtually.
