Speaking at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland during a session titled “Conversation with Emma Thompson,” she recounted an unexpected phone call from Donald Trump that took place in 1998 — the very day her divorce was finalized.
At the time, Thompson was filming the political comedy Primary Colors, directed by Mike Nichols. She recalled being in her trailer when the phone rang. Upon answering, she heard, “Hi, this is Donald Trump.” Initially thinking it was a prank, she responded with confusion. But Trump continued, saying, “I’d love you to come and stay at one of my beautiful places. Maybe we could have dinner.” Thompson replied politely, “That’s very sweet. Thank you so much. I’ll get back to you.”
Reflecting on the timing, Thompson noted that her divorce papers had just come through that day. She speculated that Trump or his team may have been actively seeking recently divorced women to date, joking that she was likely seen as a “nice divorcée” he could take out on his arm. She added with a laugh, “He found the number to my trailer — that’s stalking!”
