In a major step towards enhancing passenger comfort, Southern Railway is set to launch a new initiative from January 1, allowing travelers in sleeper class coaches to avail bedroll services at a nominal cost. Until now, this facility was reserved exclusively for air-conditioned coaches.

Passengers traveling in non-AC sleeper coaches will now be able to purchase a set comprising a bedsheet, pillow, and pillow cover for just ₹50. Individually, the bedsheet will cost ₹20, while the pillow and cover will be priced at ₹30. This move is expected to benefit a large number of passengers, especially during the winter season.

The initiative is part of Indian Railways’ broader strategy to improve non-fare revenue during the 2023–24 fiscal year. A pilot project under this scheme has already received positive feedback from passengers. Under the new system, a contractor will be responsible for procuring, washing, packing, loading, distributing, and storing the bedrolls. Southern Railway anticipates that this service will generate ₹28.27 lakh in revenue over three years for the Chennai division.

Initially, the service will be introduced on 10 express trains, including:

• Chennai–Mettupalayam Nilgiri Superfast Express
• Chennai–Mangalore Superfast Express
• Chennai Egmore–Mannargudi Express
• Chennai Egmore–Tiruchendur Superfast Express
• Chennai–Palakkad Express
• Chennai Egmore–Sengottai Silambu Superfast Express
• Tambaram–Nagelpur Superfast Express
• Chennai Superfast Express
• Chennai–Alleppey Superfast Express
• Chennai Egmore–Mangalore Express

This initiative marks a significant step in making long-distance train journeys more comfortable and accessible for budget travelers.
