IndiGo Crisis: Flight Cancellations at IGI Airport Trigger Passenger Chaos and Fare Surge
New Delhi, 6 December 2025 — A sudden cancellation of all IndiGo flights from Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport has caused massive disruption for passengers. Unable to reach their destinations on time, travelers faced severe inconvenience. The crisis escalated as other airlines hiked their fares by up to three times, and taxi drivers began charging exorbitant rates, unaware of the situation.
Busy routes like Delhi–Mumbai were hit hardest. Typically, a one-way fare from Delhi to Mumbai ranges between ₹4,500 and ₹6,000. But after the cancellations, fares skyrocketed overnight to ₹25,000–₹30,000. One passenger reported, “My IndiGo flight was cancelled. When I tried booking with another airline, the fare was more than triple.”
Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu expressed strong displeasure over the arbitrary fare hikes by airlines. He issued a directive to all carriers to keep fares under control during the crisis and warned that any airline found inflating prices would face heavy penalties.
Outside the airport, passengers were further burdened by inflated taxi and cab fares. Travelers reported being charged ₹800–₹1,000 just to move from Terminal 3 to Terminal 2 — a route that usually costs ₹200–₹300. Fares to Dwarka, Gurugram, or Central Delhi, normally ₹400–₹700, surged to ₹1,500–₹2,000 at night. Delhi Police and airport authorities received multiple complaints regarding these exploitative charges.
The situation at Terminal 3 resembled that of a crowded bus or railway station. All exit gates from the intermediate terminal were suddenly shut, leaving thousands of passengers wandering inside the airport. Initially, officials did not provide clear answers, later stating that the gates were temporarily closed for security reasons. One passenger remarked, “It feels like we’re at a local bus stand, not a world-class airport.” Photos and videos of the chaos quickly went viral on social media.
