New Delhi, Sangbad Ekalavya: A massive shake-up in national politics as speculations finally come true. Breaking his 15-year-long association with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha has officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He is not alone; six other heavyweight Rajya Sabha MPs from Arvind Kejriwal's party have also jumped ship to the saffron camp along with him.
7 MPs Leave AAP for the Saffron Camp
Raghav announced his resignation during a special press conference on Friday. The six other AAP MPs who joined the BJP alongside him are Sandeep Pathak, Ashok Mittal, Swati Maliwal, Harbhajan Singh, Rajinder Gupta, and Vikram Sahney.
Raghav Chadha Vents His Anger
Blaming AAP's current policies for his departure, Raghav Chadha said during the press conference, "The party to which I gave my blood, sweat, and 15 years of my youth has completely deviated from its core ideology and principles today. AAP no longer works for the interest of the nation, but rather for personal gains." Expressing his frustration, he added, "For the past few years, I felt like I was the 'right man in the wrong party'. Therefore, today I decided to distance myself from AAP and go to the common people."
He also highly praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's strong leadership. It is worth noting that AAP had recently removed Raghav Chadha from the post of deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha, after which his conflict with the party's top leadership became public.
The Equation to Save Parliamentary Seats
According to political observers, there is a calculated political strategy behind this defection. AAP had a total of 10 MPs in the Rajya Sabha. To evade the Anti-Defection Law and retain their parliamentary memberships, the Constitution mandates that at least two-thirds (2/3rd) of a party's MPs must merge with another party. Following this exact equation, 7 out of 10 MPs joined the BJP together to secure their positions. With this massive blow, AAP's strength in the Rajya Sabha has hit rock bottom.
