A Delhi-bound Air India flight, numbered AI2455, made an emergency landing in Chennai on Sunday evening after encountering severe weather and suspected technical issues. The aircraft, an Airbus A320, had departed from Thiruvananthapuram and remained airborne for over two hours before safely landing at Chennai airport. According to flight tracking data from Flightradar24.com, the flight was diverted mid-air due to complications that arose shortly after takeoff.

Congress MP KC Venugopal, who was among the passengers, described the experience as terrifying and said that the flight narrowly avoided a major accident. He revealed that several Members of Parliament and hundreds of passengers were onboard when the aircraft began experiencing turbulence and a flight signal fault. The pilot initially attempted to land in Chennai but had to abort the first attempt due to what Venugopal claimed was another aircraft on the runway. The plane circled the airport for nearly two hours before successfully landing on the second attempt.

Venugopal praised the pilot’s quick thinking and professionalism, stating that their decision to pull up during the first landing attempt likely saved lives. He called on the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Ministry of Civil Aviation to investigate the incident thoroughly, emphasizing that passenger safety should never be left to chance.

Air India later issued a statement clarifying that the diversion was precautionary, citing poor weather and a suspected technical issue. The airline also noted that the go-around maneuver was directed by Chennai Air Traffic Control and denied that another aircraft was blocking the runway. They assured that the aircraft would undergo mandatory inspections and that passengers were being assisted with onward travel arrangements.

This incident adds to a growing list of technical snags reported across Air India’s fleet in recent months. While no injuries were reported, the event has sparked renewed concerns over aviation safety and operational transparency.
